Packing For A Safari, Now VS. Then

Packing For A Safari, Now VS. Then

January 03, 2018

Packing for an African safari is a lot different than packing for a cruise or a hotel stay. Even if your safari isn't what you'd call rugged, you still need to pack some items that you might not need too on a different travel experience. In the 1950s, safaris were particularly popular with travelers. While they still are, the way travelers pack for them has changed quite a bit. Check out our packing for a safari now vs. then list.

Clothes

Now: The safari gets very hot so it's advisable to pack items that are lightweight and light in color. It also tends to be dusty and dirty so travelers should plan on wearing items that they don't mind discarding if need be. Shoes should be comfortable but protect the feet. Flip-flops should be left at the hotel room and travels should opt to wear sneakers while on safari. They should also plan on wearing a hat to keep the sun off of their face.

Then: Safaris goers needed to pack cotton pajamas or a nightdress. Their undergarments needed to be nylon and any color other than white. A suit would be appropriate attire to pack. For women, the skirt shouldn't be too slim as it would make it difficult to move around. Hats need not be worn, but a hat with a fly-net was advised. Travelers should also bring sand shoes or desert boots with them.

Toiletries

Now: Most safaris include accommodations at hotels or resorts that have many of the toiletries that a traveler needs. African luxury safaris take this even further! However, it is a good idea to check beforehand to find out what is available. In general, travelers should plan on bringing personal care items like razors, shaving cream, soap and shampoo and oral hygiene type items.

ThenThe standard toothbrush and toothpaste needed to be packed as well as 2-3 towels and facial tissues. It the traveler brought perfume or cologne, they needed to have the tops sellotaped. Slippers and shower caps were also encouraged. A small manicure set was recommended.

Other Items

Now: Travelers should pack an external battery charger for their cellular phone. This will ensure that there's enough battery life on it when they want to take pictures or use it as a flashlight. Sunscreen is necessary as the sun can be scorching and travelers don't want to risk getting a sunburn.

Then: Travelers should bring a plastic water bottle with them as well as a plastic drinking cup. Coat hangers are also a must as hotels don't often carry them. A torch is also necessary to make it easier to see in the evenings. A camera is a must to take pictures of all the animals seen on the safari.
