The African Savanna

February 22, 2014

The African Savanna, also known as the plains of Africa, cover almost half of the entire continent. That's almost 5 million square miles of gorgeous land! Taking a trip to the African Savanna is one of those things that is on a lot of people's bucket lists.

Things to do:

Go On A Safari

There are quite a few animals to see in the African Savanna. The best way to see these animals up close in a safe environment is to go on a safari. A tour guide will drive travelers around the area to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. Trips usually start right after the sun rises or just before it sets because the animals in this region are most active when it's a little cooler out. Animals that may be seen while on safari include elephants, hippos and lions.

Learn About The People

Africa has an interesting culture and amazing people. The villages in the African Savanna, called Bomas, are where the Masai live. They are more than willing to share their tribe with visitors. While there is a cost to enter the villages, the plethora of things to do make any payment more than worth it. Visitors can visit with a natural healer and even make a clay pot to take home. The Masai people also perform for their guests by dancing and singing. Visitors get the chance to see what nomadic life is really all about.

Try Out Rafting

When most people think about rafting, they don't really think about the African Savanna. However, there are several rafting opportunities available in the area that include taking an adventurous journey down the Nile. Visitors will first have to take a hike up either Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya in order to find a spot where they can go rafting. This type of activity certainly isn't for the faint of heart.

Getting around the Savanna:

The best way to get around this area is with a tour guide. Although it is possible for visitors to drive around in a rental car, an international driver's license is needed. Also, the Savanna doesn't have a lot of paved roads so it's often best for those with experience driving in the area to take tourists around.

Accommodations:

There are actually quite a few nice places to stay at in the African Savanna. Savanna Private Game Reserve provides 5-star accommodations for visitors and is located in Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Another option for visitors is the Tassi Camp which is located in the heart of the Savanna. It features dome tents that can sleep two people, but there are bathrooms and showers available.

Have you ever thought about visiting the African Savanna? Traveling to Africa can best be described as an adventure. With miles of grassland as well as around 2 million different large animals, this can definitely be a trip worth taking.
